Meet Reno: the Paradiso sound system

Named Reno after an inspiring friend and mentor, our sound system is anchored by gorgeous, warm tube amplification and phono staging custom built for us by EM/IA. For the gear nerds out there this includes:

  • Type 50 Permalloy Mono Block Amps

  • L/R Phono Stage

  • Elmaformer Volume Control

  • Step-up Transformer

Our house turntable is a legendary vintage Garrard 301 modified for us by EM/IA and sporting a Schick tonearm and a Denon 103 cartridge. For visiting selectors we have a DJ booth sporting a pair of modified Technics 1200s with Das MM cartridges and a Condesa rotary mixer. Our speakers are vintage Klipschorns for that unmistakable horn speaker sound.

Why analog?

We’d argue that the sound is warmer, fuller, and more spacious than digital. More importantly, analog is about experience and ritual. By playing a whole album we have a clearer window into the artists intent and emotion that drives the music. Playing vinyl is a resistance to the algorithm tearing apart the experience of the album. It’s a less passive consumption of art.

What is it like to listen to music at Paradiso?

Listening to music at Paradiso is like participating in a group listening ritual. For most of our guests we’re going to open doors to new worlds of music and sonics. This is a place where you can really sink into an album, hear something totally new in the familiar, and find new artists and genres to explore and adore.

Our staff spins whole album sides on a pristine audio system only. We often trace the contours of an artist’s work or a genre in the context of their influences and those they have influenced.

A roster of regional and international selectors will pass through Paradiso, curating exploratory sets that take our guests on tours of the winding pathways that map their own personal journeys through the world’s many musical landscapes.
