Hip-hop exploded in the late 1970s as a cultural movement that encompassed not only music but dance and fashion. It was a voice for the marginalized and oppressed, using powerful lyrics to address social and political issues. It was (nearly overnight) everywhere- TV, fashion, radio and the streets. Hip-Hop became synonymous with number one hits and radio play, dominating the charts for decades. Tonight we’re spinning whole sides that helped shape and redefine hip-hop over the last 40 years.
